Over the weekend i was weeding in the garden and pruning away the stalks from the daylilies that are coming to the end of their bloom cycle. As I was cutting i was thinking about the mantis... i'd seen the tiny little babies that were less than an inch long... but hadn't seen any good size manti yet. And then I saw the first one of the day... brown, 3 1/2 - 4 inches long, perched in the white lavender. Absolutely delighted i called joseph over to see it. A short time later i spotted a pale green one in the spanish lavender... and then another brown one in a different bed on a daylily... and a forth one (green) on the white lavender. Four good size manti so far. I also saw a small (2 inch green mantis in a flower pot that i was watering... So five manti all tolled. :-)
Paula's online gardening journal... since i can't seem to keep a written gardening journal going, i'm attempting to create (and update)this electronic one. Hopefully it will last longer than the written versions. Basic garden information... Zone 5 in Western Pennsylvania

Hi paula & joseph, hope you got the comment i sent from the apple store last saturday where i learned how
enjoyed your account of the praying manti, and photos
recently on one of the flowers that have blue pollen i watched a beetle-like bug, quite small, stand on its hind legs on a flower petal, with its front feet up against a stamen stem, while it nibbled the blue pollen
trust all is well with you and yours
my best to paula & joseph (& e.e.cummings for that matter)
comfort& joy,
jim

enjoyed reading the new postit, and the photos--especially June 26 (colorful flowers & pails), June 28 (the oh so in focus young praying mantis and the oh so in focus little plant it stands on, displaying all its slender curves & sticks before an oh so out-of-focus impressionistic background.
Hi Jim, Nice to see you following life here in PA! Wanted to let you know that i really am enjoying the gardening book you sent... I''m going to try some of the suggestions next spring. Thank you so much. -Paula
